History of Italian cabinet making

History of Italian cabinet making

From the foundation in the 1930s, at the hands of Aldo Morelato, to today the manufacturing techniques linked to the traditions of cabinet-making are used to create objects with a unique and timeless design, capable of overcoming fashions and being handed down. Our beginnings of hammer and chisel, of the artisan workshop in the province of Verona from which small works of art emerged. Furniture made to last, made one by one manually with infinite patience and attention to detail.

It was the 1960s when Morelato became a company. The first collections were born from a historical study of past styles, then Novecento was created, and the motto: “The Contemporary Classic”. The first significant collection that marks the turning point, with more geometric, more functional furnishings and lighter tones. The company’s internal Research Center, in collaboration with the architect Ugo La Pietra, draws from the study of the works of Giò Ponti and Guglielmo Ulrich, from the currents of rationalist architecture, creating modular and therefore customizable furniture with Novecento.

From here many things have happened, today in the third generation we continue the desire to combine the experience accumulated over decades of production of classic furniture, and the qualitative excellence of the essences used, with new manufacturing techniques. Let’s look forward, without forgetting the past.
From the founder’s artisan workshop, we have grown and built a solid identity over time, which finds expression in furnishings that reinvent classicism, redefining it in a modern key. Today we recognize ourselves in “Classics of tomorrow”. Our furniture wants to remain a “classic”, as current today as it was forty years ago, a cult piece to be experienced day by day, which does not follow trends but goes beyond them, chosen by those who love craftsmanship, innovation, care materials and details.

Care of materials

Care of materials

We believe in research as a driver of innovation and change, the starting point of all our creations. The undisputed center remains wood, the profound knowledge of which has pushed us to experiment with its many potentials. Wood, with its naturally lively soul, is the protagonist of the object or for some collections it combines with other materials, enhancing them and making the furniture more precious. Wood, fabric, leather, but also metals, glass, marble are among the materials chosen in the implementation of our objects, always attentive to the excellence of product quality. All the components of Morelato furniture are subjected to rigorous checks to certify their quality, during and after the manufacturing phases. We choose quality, but above all natural, materials. Thus apparent irregularities in the furniture, such as differences in the color of the wood, in the structure, irregularities in the leather or other coverings, become valuable characteristics that attest to its uniqueness and craftsmanship.

Green Program

Morelato furniture is developed responsibly, from certified wood essences coming from planned cultivations, unrelated to deforestation actions, to reduce the environmental impact as much as possible so as to create sustainable furnishings that respect people and the environment. During production, wood waste products are reduced as much as possible. This is accompanied by a responsible choice in the finishing phases of the furnishings, choosing water-based paints, to safeguard the health of our employees and to reduce domestic pollution. Firmly linked to the territory, we also pay attention to the choice of suppliers, all located in the Verona district, where we have worked expertly in the furniture sector for years. We think, design and produce entirely in Italy. The finished product expresses excellence, quality in details, finishes and shapes.

Art

It was 2003 when art entered the Morelato world. The Aldo Morelato Foundation is born, a project strongly desired to deposit, and at the same time develop, the culture linked to the tradition of furniture. The venue chosen for the Morelato Foundation is a historic Venetian residence, Villa Dionisi, confirming the solid link with the territory. Here the historical, design and artistic heritage of all our activities has been collected in a permanent exhibition, a company museum – MAAM Museum (Museum of Applied Arts in Furniture), custodian of works, prototypes, the result of research, developments, projects , study evidence and collaborations, accumulated over decades of company activity. A visual journey that summarizes the most important stages of Morelato history. Many signatures from the world of design have contributed to enriching the collection collected within the Foundation, today part of the Italian Design Repository Network established by the Triennale Museum of Milan. In the MAAM Museum, design meets art, history is intertwined with the present, furniture becomes a work. The Museum tells the biography of our company, from its roots to today.
